- What do the different letter
designations on my HP cartridges signify?
The letter designations at the end of the HP cartridge
numbers indicate ink volume. These letters are not significant
to the refilling process.
- After refilling my cartridge,
my HP printer is giving me an error message.
Error messages are usually resolved by reseating the
cartridges in the printer, wiping down the cartridge contacts,
or power-cycling the printer.
- I have refilled my cartridge
and nothing prints.
The most common causes of this problem are blocked printheads
or air trapped in the cartridge. To clear any blockage,
use the small and/or large rubber priming tips, if included
with the refill kit, to clear the printhead. Instructions
for this are located in the manual. You may also try soaking
the printhead (the bottom portion of the cartridge where
the ink exits) in 1/4" to 1/2" solution of 50% warm, distilled
water and 50% alcohol for about an hour.

- I have refilled my cartridge
and now it is leaking.
Possible causes of this are overfilling, a fill-hole
seal that is not airtight, or the sponge in the cartridge
is beginning to dry up and is not holding the refilled
ink. In the case of overfilling, extract some ink from
the cartridge. If you have a cartridge that requires the
fill hold to be sealed, ensure that your fill-hole seal
is airtight. It may be necessary to reseal the filling
hole where you injected the ink. Many cartridges have
sponges inside. Make sure you penetrate the sponge with
your needle and push down to the bottom then slowly remove
upwards as you inject the ink. Inserting your needle in
different directions in the sponge may also help it to
regain some of its porosity. Reseal the filling hole where
you injected the ink.
- The instructions in the manual
require me to drill a hole in my cartridge. Is there another
way to do this?
Enlarging or drilling fill holes is usually very easy
using the drill bit that is included with most Stratitec
Inkjet Refill Kits. However, you can easily melt a hole
in the cartridge with a hot nail. Holding the nail with
pliers, carefully heat the nail over a flame or on a stove
until the tip begins to glow red. Then hold the tip of
the nail to the cartridge until it melts through the cap.
- How do I know which colors go
where in my HP color cartridge? Do I follow the diagram
in your instruction manual?
Always double check the colors in your cartridge by inserting
a toothpick into each filling hole to determine which
color goes where.
